About Nantou Ancient City
Long before the skyscrapers, whoever governed the region did so from here. The area has administrative records since the year 331, the current walls date to 1394, from the Ming dynasty, and in 1573 Nantou became the seat of the new Xin'an County, which covered much of today's Shenzhen and all of the Hong Kong territory. The seat only moved away in 1953.
Much of the wall was lost over the centuries, and Nantou became an urban village, with residents, shops and narrow alleys. What remains are stretches of wall, the south and east gates and about 40 buildings from the Qing period or the early 20th century. Enter through the south gate and let the alleys carry you.
