About Karaalioğlu Park and Hıdırlık Tower

The Hıdırlık Tower occupies the southwest corner of Kaleiçi's walls, already inside the park. Built in the 2nd century, it is about 14 meters tall and has a shape that looks designed by two architects who never spoke to each other: a square block below, a cylinder above. The result is one of the easiest silhouettes to recognize in the old town.

Next to it, Karaalioğlu Park follows the edge of the cliffs and is the easiest place in the old town to watch the sun go down over the bay, with the Beydağları range cut out against the sky across the water. The tower, lit from the side by the low sun, does the rest of the photo.
