About Thalang Road and the Sunday Market

Phuket made its fortune from tin, mined on the island since the 16th century, and Thalang Road is where that money still shows on the facades. It is the best-known street in the Old Town, with narrow Sino-Portuguese shophouses, restored and now home to cafés, shops and restaurants.

On Sunday evenings the street closes to traffic and becomes the Walking Street Market, the weekly market of the old center. To understand who built all of this, head to nearby Krabi Road: the Thai Hua Museum occupies one of the city's first Chinese-language schools and tells the story of the migration from southern China, the tin cycle and the Peranakan families.
