About High Line

Starting in the 1930s, freight trains ran along this viaduct and rolled straight into buildings to unload. After 1980 the line was abandoned and weeds took over. When the park opened in 2009, the designers decided to imitate precisely that wild growth: landscape designer Piet Oudolf planted about 400 species of grasses and wildflowers.

It runs 1.45 miles (2.3 km) from Gansevoort Street to around 34th Street, next to Hudson Yards, always a few stories above the sidewalk. You cross the streets overhead, from the Meatpacking District to Chelsea, catching glimpses of the Hudson River in the gaps between buildings. In 2019, the walk was already receiving about 8 million visitors a year.
