About Chandni Chowk

The 1650 design was by Princess Jahanara, Shah Jahan's daughter, and it had a canal running down the middle of the street and a pool that reflected the moon, hence the name. The pool gave way to a clock tower in the 1870s, but the street never lost its bustle: it is one of India's biggest wholesale markets, with whole lanes of jewelry, electronics and wedding invitations.

The main stretch became a pedestrian walkway in 2021, which makes walking easier. For the nose, the destination is Khari Baoli, the spice market; for the stomach, Paranthe Wali Gali. Along the way you pass the Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and the Jain temple Lal Mandir.
